The Cross of Saint George, the patron saint of England, surmounts the coat of arms and is a symbol of Alberta's traditional ties with Great Britain. Many of the early settlers in the territory were of British descent and were bound by sentiment to the mother country. The Marques of Lorne, governor-general of Canada from 1878 until 1883, visited Calgary and Banff in 1881, and the territory was named for his wife, Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, daughter of Queen Victoria of Great Britain. Alberta, province in western Canada, the most westerly of the three Prairie provinces, which also include Manitoba and Saskatchewan. It is a region of contrast and color. As represented in the provincial coat of arms, Alberta is a land of golden wheat fields, rolling plains, tree-clad foothills, snowy mountains, and clear blue skies.
