Its major resources are deposits of oil, natural gas, and mineral ores, but sparse transportation facilities have hindered most economic development. Formed in 1870, shortly after the Dominion of Canada, the Northwest Territories gradually shrank as Canada's Prairie provinces (Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan) were created from its lands. Northwest Territories, administrative region of Canada, encompassing all Canadian land north of 60° north latitude, except for the Yukon Territory and small parts of the provinces of Québec and Newfoundland and Labrador. The Northwest Territories includes all islands in Hudson, James, and Ungava bays. The territorial capitol is Yellowknife.
