Northwest Territory
Straddling the Arctic Circle, the Northwest Territories is largely unsuited for agriculture or habitation. Its major resources are deposits of oil, natural gas, and mineral ores, but sparse transportation facilities have hindered most economic development. Formed in 1870, shortly after the Dominion of Canada, the Northwest Territories gradually shrank as Canada's Prairie provinces (Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan) were created from its lands. Two groups of indigenous peoples-the Inuit, also known as Eskimos, and the Dene-make up about one-half of the population.
