Ontario, province of Canada. It is bounded by Québec on the east; the Saint Lawrence River, Lakes Ontario, Erie, Huron, and Superior, and the state of Minnesota on the south; Manitoba on the west; and Hudson and James bays on the north. Because of its location, which is toward the interior of Canada, Ontario is known as the Heartland Province. It is the economic center of Canada. With a highly developed and diversified economy, Ontario leads all other provinces in agriculture and manufacturing. Its farmers and producers have access to excellent transportation facilities, especially the Saint Lawrence Seaway, which is a vital link with the Atlantic Ocean. Ontario
The nucleus of the province emerged as Upper Canada in 1791, when the original colony of Québec was divided. From 1841 to 1867 Ontario was reunited with Québec in the United Province of Canada and Ontario was popularly known as Canada West. With the confederation of Canada in 1867, Ontario became a separate province, and since then both its identity and its name have been firmly fixed. It contains Ottawa, the seat of Canada's federal government. Once staunchly English in outlook, Ontario took on a much more cosmopolitan air in the late 20th century.
